On the Road Again
June 10
Today we spent the majority of the day on the bus. Bus time was good for chatting, singing and playing guess this song. We left the bible college and stopped for a late lunch in Kisumu. Our lunch was at a local place right on Lake Victoria. It was a beautiful lake. The local people were washing cars in the lake. It was really different to see people back small vehicles and large cemi trucks in to the lake for a car wash. Now for the food, we definitely experienced food the way locals eat! We had literally an entire fish. There was no silverware so we picked the meat off with our hands. This was also the first I had ugail. It is a thick, doughy, potatoy type food with little taste at all. Look it up online for a better description, haha. The fish was delicious! During the meal, local vendors kept coming around trying to sell us things. Probably because we are white people, so they view that as us having money.
After lunch we headed to the E.L.C.K. Lake Diocese Headquarters. Here we met with the bishop of the diocese and also Arch Bishop Obare. They spoke to us for some time, welcoming us, giving us a background of Project 24 and much more. Something we have been told every place we have went is to "Feel at home." Everyone has welcomed us with open arms.
The arch bishop talked about how we are all One in Christ and will ultimately meet in Heaven. His words were inspirational and are something for everyone to remember.
Perhaps the most anxiety-filled part of the day came just before our arrival to our place. We had been driving for a couple hours, moving along side a rain storm that had lightening that was spectacular. Our local guide thought we missed the turn to our place so he and our driver walked to check. This is where the anxiousness started because there was a large crowd of people gathered watching some sort of political rally on a smaller scale of a drive in movie screen. Thankfully it was dark so they could not see we were white people. If they would have saw us, I'm sure our bus would have been surrounds with people trying to sell us things. We found the right road, only to come across an extremely iffy road that was dirt, filled with potholes, and a bump that was too big for the bus to get over. So, we all grabbed our carry on's and walked a short walk to the place we're staying at. This was a little scary because it was very dark and we did not know the area. Luckily we had one of our leaders who we were able to follow. Somehow our luggage arrived to us (thinking some people brought them in their smaller vehicles). I'm guessing the bus will not be making that trip twice a day! We were greeted by the arch bishops wife, Eunice, and she provided is with supper.
We finally made it to Pacific Place in a small town. This is the arch bishops guest house. What a guest house! We all have our own rooms, shower and toilet. Unfortunately there is no Internet here, so you will probably be reading this well after we have left here. We will be staying here for the next four nights. Although I, along with the others, are disappointed about the internet situation, it will give us opportunities to focus on the real reason we are here. We aren't here to talk to people back home, check email, FaceTime or Skype people, we are here for Project 24.
After supper, we were all very tired from a long day of traveling. We spent time on each others rooms laughing and talking about the trip thus far and what is still to come. I can hear lots of thunder, wind and rain in the distance now, so we will probably be getting a storm tonight. The thunder and lightning here is so much "bigger" than at home.
I better get some sleep so I am ready for a day of meeting children and visiting another Project 24 Rescue Center tomorrow. I hope things are going well with all of you :)
